33 Things I LoveLife
It’s my 33rd birthday, which I’m struggling to even wrap my mind around. It seems like the years just slip by these days, and I swear I just turned 25 last year. Fortunately, I’ve long since trained my kids that the answer to how old I am is always 29! 🙂
To celebrate the day I thought I’d share with you 33 things I love, in no particular order.
#1. Numbers 1-3 on my list are, of course, my beautiful children. My sons are turning 13 this year (yikes!) and my little girl will be six next week. They are what makes my world go ’round (and my hair go gray).
#2. See #1
#3. See #1
#4. Reading – I’ve loved to read as long as I can remember and am never happier than when I’m curled up somewhere quiet and cozy with a yummy snack and a good book.
#5. Shopping – For anything and everything. I love the process, I love the hunt, I just love everything about it!
#6. Tattoos – I have a few (and have had a couple removed), and I love them on other people as well. They are such a unique way to display your personality or to memorialize things that are sacred to you.
#7. Scars – This may seem weird, but I think scars tell such a beautiful story about what people have overcome. I have several, including a prominent one on my face, and although I may remove pimples when touching up a photo I never remove my scars. They’re part of my story!
#8. Writing – I’m sure this is closely linked to my love of reading, but I really enjoy writing. I’ve kept a diary my entire life (which my sister has agreed to burn upon my death), and writing the posts is one of my favorite things about blogging.
#9. Learning – For someone who loathed school, I absolutely love learning. I crave it. I read a lot, obviously, but I also sign up for seminars or conferences for things that interest me. There’s just something about knowing something you didn’t know before that fuels me.
#10. Dining out – I love food. I wish I’d appreciated my metabolism when I was young, but even though I have to be more mindful of my diet as I age I will never give up dining out. I love trying new restaurants and new dishes, and I make a point of taking my kids out for a meal once per week. It’s one of my favorite things to do as a family.
#11. Traveling – Growing up, our family was too poor to do any traveling so as an adult I just want to see everything. I’m actually in Hawaii right now with two of my siblings, and I have a long list of places I want to see and experience. As my children get older I look forward to showing them as much of the world as possible.
#12. Blogging – I am such a newbie, but I’m having so much fun! I’m learning a lot (see #9) and meeting wonderful people.
#13. Fashion magazines – I love everything about them. The ads, the articles, the trends, the ideas…everything! You’ll never catch me at the pool without one, and it’s always a good day when the new Harper’s Bazaar lands in the mailbox.
#14. Coffee – I used to HATE coffee…I couldn’t stand the smell or the taste. Then my third child was born, and before you know it I’m starting every day with a cup of Joe. There is nothing better than sitting on the deck with a hot coffee on a cool summer morning.
#15. Sleeping – I don’t think I need to explain this one. I just really love to sleep.
#16. My sister – I have five sisters, and I love them all. However, my relationship with my sister Jenny is one that I cherish dearly. We talk nearly every day, take an annual trip together, and I know I can always count on her to support me (after she’s done laughing at me). I’m so lucky to have her!
#17. My best friend – I met my friend Sarah the same year the twins were born, and it was an instant kinship. I bought a house on the same street as her shortly after we met, and our friendship has never wavered. Even when life and relocation results in months without seeing each other, we are always just as close. She is family to me, and I love her to death.
#18. My extra mom – I’ve never been particularly close to my mom, for no particular reason. I met Jackie right when my ex-husband left me with infant twins, and she absolutely saved my life. She helped raise the boys by frequently watching them while I worked (and never accepting pay), and over the years we’ve developed the kind of relationship I always wish I’d had with my mom. She’s a wonderful woman, and I know for certain I couldn’t have made it as a single parent without her.
#19. Solitude – At heart, I’m an introvert. I love and need time to be by myself. It recharges me in a way nothing else can.
#20. Dressing up – There is nothing quite like getting dressed to the nines! I rarely get an excuse to do it, but it is always so much fun!
#21. Working out – Like coffee, this was an acquired taste. I’m not a natural athlete, but I’ve learned to commit to regular exercise as part of my mental and physical self-care. I don’t always love doing it, but I always love how I feel when it’s done.
#22. Swimming – Actually, I just love everything about being near water. The noise, the waves, the sparkles from the sun…but mostly I love that muffled silence that you experience when you’re underwater. It is so calming to me.
#23. Tanning – I think I was a rotisserie chicken in a previous life, because I seriously love just laying in the sun and baking away.
#24. Massages – God bless whoever invented massage therapy! I’m not a touchy-feely person, but if I had unlimited income I would get a massage every single day.
#25. Laughing – Not just any laugh…the kind that makes your stomach and kidneys ache and your face contort. The kind where you literally can’t stop, and every time you do you just crack up again. My sister Jenny makes me ugly-laugh more than anyone, and it’s my favorite thing about spending time with her.
#26. Music – There is a special power in music, I’m convinced. I love that there is music for every mood, and how some songs can literally touch your soul or move you to tears. I love listening to classical piano in the bath, rap in the gym, and upbeat pop or country when I’m driving around.
#27. Shooting – I was introduced to the pistol range by a friend a few years ago, and immediately fell in love. I was terrified to try it, but it is such an amazing release. I took a few private lessons, and own a handgun myself. I don’t keep any ammunition at home because I don’t want to worry about it with the kids, but it’s something I look forward to getting better at.
#28. Thunderstorms – The big ones, with bright flashes of lightning, driving rain, and the booms of thunder that shake the house.
#29. True crime – I have no idea why, but I am totally addicted to true crime. Investigation Discovery is about the only network I watch (excluding my daily Jeopardy fix, natch), and I never get sick of it.
#30. Cocktails – Similar to my love of dining out, I love going out for drinks. I’m always down to try a place’s signature cocktail or just play is safe with wine or prosecco.
#31. Being inspired – You know that feeling when something inspires you? Almost like a door opening inside you? I love that feeling. One of my favorite writers that always inspires me is Benjamin P Hardy…you should check out his articles!
#32. Sweatpants – Enough said.
#33. Getting older – While I may not love everything that comes with getting older (like when did I start creaking and where did that wrinkle come from?), I never forget that it is a privilege denied to many. So I’m grateful for every year I get.
I would love to hear anything you have on your “love” list, so please share in the comments!
Thanks so much for reading!
